Citizen Science
August 1, 2026; 10am-12pm

Join us in the Arboretum Library for a special conversation exploring the power of science communication and community-driven discovery.

Crescent Farm Interpretive Horticulturist John Latsko and Arboretum Librarian Leena Waller invite you to a special video presentation featuring a recent conversation with author, bee photographer, and friend of the Crescent, Krystle Hickman, alongside citizen scientist Katelyn Liu.

Together, we’ll explore the growing role of science communication in everyday life and how community observation plays a vital role in ecological understanding and conservation. Discover how everyday people contribute meaningful data through citizen science—and learn simple ways you can begin documenting and sharing observations from your own backyard, neighborhood, or favorite natural spaces.

Whether you’re curious about pollinators, community science, or simply looking for new ways to engage with the natural world, this program offers inspiration and practical tools to get involved.

Hickman’s book, The ABCs of California’s Native Bees, will be available for purchase in the Arboretum Gift Shop.

Lasagna Mulching
November
 14, 2026; 10am-12pm

Join Interpretive Horticulturist John Latsko for an engaging, hands-on Lasagna Mulching Workshop!

Discover how to build healthy, fertile soil using simple materials you may already have at home or can easily source locally. Rooted in the philosophy of “use what you have,” lasagna mulching is a practical, sustainable gardening method that transforms cardboard and organic mulch into rich, productive soil.

Whether you’re looking to remove your lawn, reduce weeds, or transition to a more water-wise landscape, this proven technique offers an effective and low-maintenance solution. Through a visual presentation and hands-on experience, you’ll learn the fundamentals of sheet mulching—and put them into practice by helping maintain Crescent Farm.

Please bring gloves and drinking water, and wear close-toed shoes and a hat for outdoor work.
